Weekly Learning

RE

Spring 2 Week 4-

We listened to the Bible story about how Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. We learned that on Palm Sunday, the Church remembers this special moment when Jesus rode into the city and crowds of His followers welcomed Him, waving palm branches and shouting, “Hosanna!”

We talked about how this happened so that Jesus could fulfil a promise God had made long ago about how His Son would enter Jerusalem. Jesus had many followers who came to see Him, cheer for Him, and worship Him. However, there were also some people who did not like Jesus and wanted the cheering to stop.

We discussed how we, too, are invited to welcome Jesus into our lives and to praise and worship Him as our King.

The children were then invited to retell the story through small‑world play or role‑play, using the words Jerusalem, donkey, and Hosanna. After this, they looked at different artworks that show the scene in various ways.

The children imagined what it might have felt like to be part of the crowd—what they might have seen and heard. They wrote speech bubbles showing what the crowd might have been saying and added them to the pictures. They were also invited to create their own artwork depicting the scene.

Spring Term Week 5-

We shared the story of Good Friday from the children’s Bible and thought about how sad it was when Jesus died. We lit a candle and asked the children to describe the light. Then, after blowing out the candle, we asked them how it felt without the light. Each child took a turn blowing out the candle and saying, “Jesus, we are sorry.”

We talked about why Christians have crosses—to help us remember what Jesus did for us and how much He loves us. The cross is a sign of a Christian: someone who loves and follows Jesus. We then went on a cross hunt around the school, and the children were invited to make their own crosses using a variety of materials.

After this, we listened to the story of Jesus’ resurrection and asked the children to retell it. We discussed how, when Jesus rose from the tomb, He was given new life by God. To celebrate this new life at Easter, people often decorate their homes with eggs, chicks, bunnies and lambs, as these remind us of the new life God promises us too.

Finally, we made an Easter garden to help us remember the story.

Book Title: So Much
Author: Helen Oxenbury

9/3/26:
Last week the Reception children were introduced to the story So Much, exploring the warmth and humour found in family celebrations. In the story, the family gathers together to celebrate Dad’s birthday. The story includes repetitive words and actions, which the children really enjoyed listening to.

New vocabulary and actions introduced this week: brolly, whiskers, excited, ding dong, and wide.

Book Title: Little Glow
Author: Katie Sahota

16/3/26:
This week we have been reading the story of a lonely little candle looking out onto the world. The children explored the seasons and themes that connect the little glow’s journey to other families around the world. The story highlights different destinations, cultures, and seasons, showing the importance of the “little glow.” It includes beautiful descriptive language, which the children enjoyed discussing, and the accompanying actions made the vocabulary interactive and engaging.

New vocabulary: flicker, lighthouse, glow, stargazers, and lanterns.
